My 4 year old could do that." Well, now even you can do it. Through the blessings of Stumble, I found a great site called Jackson Pollock. A genius piece of flash design that allows you to release your inner abstract expressionist, whilst subtly letting you know about a limited edition at the Blow de la Barra gallery in the UK.

The flash animation is based on Pollock's signature splatter style, allowing you to create something unique everytime.

It's created by the guys at Stamen Design in San Francisco, USA.

...and for your viewing pleasure, here's my attempt at history

nokia music almighty

Nokia Europe have put together a pretty average website to promote it's new Music Almighty campaign. Here's what happens when you get a bunch of old ad execs who think they're still cool:

We make phones that play music. Youth like music. Youth like interactivity. Youth like to engage via user-generated website. User-generated websites contain lots of photos uploaded by youth. Let's create a website where youths can upload their heads, force them to nominate a social subset, manipulate the photo to make them look weird and then send it to their friends.

As if generation Why (See what I did? Clever, no?) didn't have enough of an sore spot about appearances as it is.

And you're forgetting something. There's almost entirely no motivation to do it. No competition, no 15 minutes of fame, and unfortunately it isn't cool/funny/interesting enough to just do it for shits and giggles. And didn't you get the Twitter update on your Hip Top? Generation Y doesn't like to be pigeon-holed, even if their emo fringe is a dead giveaway.

Also, the level of manipulation and interactivity you can achieve with the controls is rather unimpressive. You can go from 'happy to sad', 'old to young' and varying degrees of caricature. ('No caricature' gives you a fat head and the opposite squishes your face. That's it.)

The only remotely funny thing about it is the 'Philharmaniac' who looks like Hitler, singing along to the Wagner track playing. You know, Wagner was Hitler's favourite composer..get it?

It's a shame that this site fell down strategically, because the flash animation and usability is reassuringly, efficiently Nokia, as we've come to expect. Now if they could fire the agency that has the other half of their strategy document, they might have a fighting chance.

Source: Adverblog

tokyo underground maps web 2.0

Maps are handy. They tell you where things are in relation to other things. You can follow them. So perhaps this is why they've become the method du jour in terms of demystifying and charting web trends and other digital goodness, rendering a somewhat complicated new world a little more digestable.

Information Architects Japan (iA) have created a nice one using the Japan underground train map to chart this territory for 2008. It charts different web trends as different lines on the tube map, showing how different trends dissect each other.

Those familar with Tokyo's underground will find this particularly meaningful as the more important stations are occupied by similarly big players in the digital world, for example Google occupies Tokyo central station, moving from Shinjunku station in the 2007 version of this map.

Facebook on the otherhand, once occupying more lucrative real estate, has been demoted to Nippori station: whilst it's an important hub, its very boring. We know Web 2.0 is the future, this much has been drummed into us daily as digital champions.

Here's an interesting presentation by Jimmy Maymann, CEO of GoViral at Cannes 2008 called Social Metropolis.

This is a slide from the presentation that really nicely maps out the key digital players right now.

So why should you watch it?

1. You are carried through the site by a beautiful martial artist, very Zhang Ziyi.

Nokia's 'green' marketing touch is to give you the opportunity to win a new Nokia N96 before release date but donating 758 Euros, which goes to saving the rare red panda, in Nepal. It feels a little tacked in and I'm not sure what the relevance of red pandas are to Nokia..perhaps all the giant pandas were all booked out for the Games? This is a high adrenalin, special-effects action showpiece that follows on the story from the Terminator 1 and 2 movies. The star of the show is still the iconic Terminator and the relentless path of destruction as it seeks out John Connor and anyone else deemed a link with the future.

Mediums used: Online and Mobile.

How they did it: Driving viewers to WAP and Microsite versions of the campaign site through online rich media banners:

The call to action is to 'terminate a mate'. What a tempting thought.

By entering in their friend's name and mobile number as well as using GPS technology, the 'terminatior' is able to pinpoint the recipient's location in real time, providing an element of targeted personalisation.

Resulting in something on your handset that looked like this:

The online version was equally compelling, showing a 'news story' about your mate being shot down at work. This is accompanied by an office fantasy (for some) come true - a bunch of marines shooting up the water cooler.

The results came in the form of the highest audience viewship numbers EVER for Virgin 1. Proof in the power of targeted advertising and digital to bring the numbers to the table.

Source: Adverblog

think outside the box

Banners have long been the first port of call for online advertising. It utilises a hockeystick format with using coding that allows banners to 'talk to' one another, creating an interesting scenario when some hardcore looking army dude decide they want to have a jacuzzi party with the hottie from Hawaii.

mag nation

Mag Nation is 'the world's first magazine superstore' - like a gigantic cyber newsagency. Even TVCs. Ahh the golden years of above the line advertising.

In our ever jaded present, we need to do more to keep consumers paying attention (not all of them good). There's the 'shouty' ad, the emotive ad, and more. But the trend of the moment is all about entertaining. Consumers are smart. They know you're trying to sell something, so why not entertain them in exchange for selling your wares?

The Germans are known for being on time, no-nonsense and very, uh, black and white. Mainly focusing on Photoshop and what you can do with it (hence the name), its a great little tool for getting to know a bit more about graphic design and its capabilities.

8. Kotaku

Gamer nerd-alert. This site is all about the latest games, hacks, cheats, gossip, news, in short EVERYTHING to do with games of the online and console nature and is in the same ownership group as Lifehacker, Gizmodo and Defamer.

7. CarAdvice

Started by a bunch of utter car nuts who know and love absolutely everything there is about cars. You'll find car reviews, news, gossip, specs, advice and more. Everything you need to get your motor revving.

6. I started something

20 year old Long Zheng describes his site as such:

blog for fun, profit and the gals.

I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, unless persuaded by a lot of money (see rule #1).

I will happily oblige to all PR filtering requests if it ends with “pretty please”.

I try to break stories first, unless when broken by another careless blogger then I will innocently walk away and whistle.

I never make mistakes. Any mistakes are to be blamed on Microsoft or the dog I don’t own.

I expect no one else to blog except me. It only makes sense to have a monopolistic blog writing about a monopolistic company. You don’t want to break the universe do you?

Hmmm...don't know about 'the gals' but it is a great site for what's going on out there in the interwebs and it's written in an easy, conversational manner that proves that technology and trends blogs don't have to be scary and written in geek-speak.

5. Lifehack

Lifehack is exactly that...tips (or for geek gamers, 'hacks') to make your life easier or at least a bit more interesting. Applications to help your organise your life, tips on how to multi-task and more - it's like an Idiot's guide to living.

4. Gizmodo

In the same group as Lifehack et al, this blog is all about gadgets: What's out, what's coming out, what people think is coming out, gossip, rumour and reviews. If you want to know about a gadget, best to come here first to find out what it is.

3. Problogger

Problogger describes itself as "Tips to help you make money from blogging".

At the time of writing, the site was down so perhaps they need to take some of their lessons on board...? When live, it's a comprehensive blog about how to utilise digital media such as other people's blogs, social media and user-generated content mediums to build your profile and earn status, as well as money, depending on how you work it. Not just for blogger-heads, this site has quick and easy tips for newbies (such as "What is a blog?") to experts who want to build a readership and reputation (3 steps to increase your traffic in 30 days).

2. Digital Photography School

Everything you ever wanted to know about digital photography; from technology to techniques, news, reviews and free downloads. With a massive readership of people who help each other with advice and experience, this site has maintained a steady spot at the top for a while.

1. Photoshop Tutorials

If you use Photoshop, you must check this blog. It's one of the most comprehensive and easy to read blogs out there. If it has anything to do with techniques, emerging technology, how to's, inspirational work and sites, fonts, news, ANYTHING - you'll find it on this site.

So basically, what unifying features do these blogs have?

1. They're written by people who are experts and passionate about their subject matter

No matter what they're writing about, if it's about technology or your cat's breakfast - the blog reading public are all for credibility.

2. They are well researched and referenced

People who read blogs generally want to a) dig deeper and b) verify what you're talking about.
So provide links to referenced information.

3. They read well to their target audience (and in general)

Writers have to talk the language of the people reading it. That's just common sense.

4. The layout is simple and easy to follow

If you have to spend time trying to work out where the hell you are on the page, you're not going to have a great reading experience. The same goes for font size and style - it's not rocket science.

5. They offer feedback, contact or commenting options

Bloggers can be a vocal bunch and they like to let you (and others) know what they think. Give them an outlet or risk low traffic, hostility or hacked pages.

IMVU and second life: virtual worlds making real money

We've all heard how successful and oddly addictive Second Life has been over the past couple of years.

Well IMVU has around 7 million MORE members than Second Life, having just pipped the 20 million registered users milestone.

But what is it? IMVU started with creating avatars that can chat on its IM framework, in a virtual environment and like Second Life, IMVU began to grow amongst the growing fascination in Web-based virtual communities.

According to Mashable.com:

"Similar to Second Life, IMVU also has a secondary focus on the people-powered economy where users can buy and sell virtual goods, some of which they’ve created themselves. It’s this virtual market that has grown right alongside IMVU’s population, reaching over 1.5 million items to date. IMVU credits viral growth, its economy, and its ability to offer a niche environment for a wide range of users, from Anime fans to Goth and Latino."

As with its real-world counterpart economies, these alternate realities are subject to booms and busts which have to be countered by improved technology and networks.

So why haven't we heard much about IMVU?

Says CEO Cary Rozenweig on virtualworldsnews.com: "At this point what we're trying to do is begin the process of sharing IMVU more broadly and starting to talk about some of our achievements and accomplishments," said Rosenzweig. "We have the world's largest digital goods catalog. Our total registrations are above 20 million. Another highlight is we want to begin to talk a little more explicitly, from a business standpoint, going out and saying our revenues are currently a $1 million a month, signaling that this is not just an idea, but a business."

The key difference between Second Life and IMVU seems to be the way advertising is targeted at registered users. Whilst any brand and their dog can pretty much have as much exposure as they like on SL as long as they have the bucks (real AND virtual) to back them up, IMVU takes a more targeted though less integrated approach to advertising to it's members.

Whichever camp you belong to, the reality of the situation is that as these virtual worlds continue to evolve, so should smarter advertising.

top gear rta spoof

A great piece of work by our guys at The Works Sydney, which plays on the well-known New South Wales government TVC about guys who love grunty cars having tiny penises. *cue pinkie finger waving in the air* The ad aired last night to a flurry of giggles and a lot of talk...well done, team!

qode

...Waiter, there's some mess on my billboard...

No, its a Qode. Facebook's flashmob group assembled in Martin Place and Pitt Street after syncronising watches. For 3 minutes, they froze in whatever position they happened to be in at 12.40 AEST, whether that be drinking a bottle of water, fighting with a friend or having a cheeky 'ol pash - much to the confusion of passers by during the lunchtime rush.

According to news.com.au, more than 42,000 people were invited to the event on Facebook, about 3,750 said they would attend but in true Facebook fashion, a much smaller number ended up making it on the day.
